Plastic raw materials may be combined with additives, such as minerals like calcium carbonate or talc etc., as well as organic products such as glass, cotton, etc. mica. As a result of these fillers being added several feed systems were developed to provide optimal integration to the melt.

One such method uses side feed extruders to provide downstream addition. Side Feeders are either single or twin screw extruders with zero compression screws that positively convey ingredients into the stream. The use of side feeders provides higher downstream addition rates than compared to gravity feeding into a downstream barrel. Proper screw design and manufacturing is thus required to handle the higher rates and to achieve the required extrusion objectives.
