Feed Housing

The feed throat is the section in a barrel where plastic is directed into the screw channel. The feed throat or housing is fitted around the first few flights of the screw. The feed rolls and spiral undercuts in the feed housing are used to achieve smooth feeding of the compound into the extruder screw.

In certain machines the feed throat is an integral part of a barrel, therefore when selecting a plasticator barrel, manufacturing the appropriate size and shape of the feed throat is essential. The feed housing section is important in ensuring that plastics are properly plasticized.
